The ETH devs have warned us that The Merge won’t immediately grant us lower transaction fees and as such, the Layer 2s have continued to prove useful (and valuable for saving on fees) but how long will they last? Will ETH grant cheaper transactions on the native chain? When will this happen if it does?
No timeline has been given from ETH devs, but it’s something to pay attention to if ETH L2s are heavy in your portfolio. I don’t think L2s will instantly become (or perhaps every become useless) they will most likely still serve helpful roles in making certain types of transactions faster or cheaper still, also some L2s offer more utility than just fast/cheap transactions, like privacy features for example.
It’s likely they will still play some kind of part in the ETH ecosystem as the network progresses, but exactly what that role looks like remains to be seen.

Ethereum Developers In ‘Final Stages Of Planning’ Next Major Upgrade
‘Dencun’ Will Focus On Scaling To Reduce Transaction Costs Despite Ethereum’s Shapella upgrade going live just three weeks ago, the Ethereum Foundation is already looking ahead to the network’s next upgrade, dubbed Dencun. According to a May 3 blog post from Ethereum Foundation community manager Tim Beiko, Ethereum’s core developers are already in “the final stages of planning” for Dencun.
